The Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association honored WUGA 91.7/97.9 FM with four awards for radio reporting.
Mary Kay Mitchell, WUGA news director, won first place for best general reporting. She spoke with University of Georgia officials and students about the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action in admissions decisions.
Mitchell and David Bryant, public relations coordinator for the Georgia Sea Grant program, won second place for best series reporting for the two-and-one-half hour series, “Earth, Air, Fire and Water.” Also sponsored by the UGA Environmental Ethics Certificate Program, the five shows featured nature writers reading and talking about their work. The series was distributed nationally through the National Public Radio satellite system.
WUGA intern James Montgomery and Mitchell took second place for best feature reporting for a story on scrambled egg meals-ready-to-eat that Romeo Toledo (a professor in UGA’s Department of Food Science and Technology) is developing for the military.
WUGA reporter Cari Gervin received second place for best use of sound for her profile of the Zoom Bait Company, a family-owned business in Athens.
The awards were presented at AP’s annual banquet held May 1 in Atlanta. The competition is open to all television and radio stations in the state of Georgia.
