Media Advisory: Symposium to address democracy in Africa

Athens, Ga. –The University of Georgia’s African Studies Institute and Department of International Affairs will kick-off a 3-day international symposium entitled, “Democracy and Culture: An African Perspective” at the Georgia Center on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4:00 pm.

The purpose of the symposium is to bring together scholars and practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines and regions to examine the controversial topics of democracy and culture in Africa both in theory and in practice.  Topics to be explored include: How is democracy defined? Is Western democracy replicable across the globe?  Given Africa’s historical, social, cultural, economic and political realities, can African states become democracies?

“Western nations have packaged democracy as the best path to peace and prosperity in the world. The fundamental question remains whether or not democracy is a one-size-fits-all system,” said conference organizer and international affairs professor Abdulahi Osman.
