Athens, Ga. – On Sunday, Nov. 19, local radio audiences will be able to hear the broadcast of Mountain Stage which was recorded live in Athens at the UGA Performing Arts Center. The popular radio show will air at 2 p.m. on WUGA, The Classic 91.7/97.9 FM.
In August, WUGA sponsored the local recording of the internationally renowned program with the UGA Performing Arts Center serving as co-sponsor. The show featured musicians from the South, with Athens’ own Vic Chestnutt as the headliner. Other Athens performers on the program included Modern Skirts and Tin Cup Prophette. Garrison Star, Carbon Leaf and Aslyn rounded out the program.
Mountain Stage is a two-hour radio show recorded before a live audience and is based in Charleston, WV. Now in its 20th year, the show has established a long tradition of featuring national and international acts in almost every style of music, ranging from traditional roots and country music to avant-garde rock and jazz. In addition to showcasing both established and emerging artists from the United States, Mountain Stage has featured artists from all over the world.
Over the years, guests have included Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, Phish, Muzikas (Hungary), Buddy Guy, Ali Farke Toure (Mali), Dr. John, The Del McCoury Band, Joan Baez, Barenaked Ladies, Randy Newman, Chucho Valdes (Cuba), Ralph Stanley, John Cale, Wilco, Bobby Blue Bland, The Indigo Girls, Altan (Ireland), Lucinda Williams, Joshua Redman, Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson, Norah Jones and R.E.M.
