University Health Center commemorates World AIDS Day

Athens, Ga. – The UGA University Health Center is sponsoring activities to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, both globally and locally, and to commemorate those who have died fighting this disease during World AIDS Day on Friday, Dec. 1. This year’s World AIDS Day theme is “Twenty-five years is too long. Be part of the solution.”

The Health Promotion Department and UGA student volunteers will staff tables at the Tate Center Plaza from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Information about HIV/AIDS will be available along with red ribbons and free condoms.

Three million people have died since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1981. The fastest growing method of HIV transmission is in the U.S. is through heterosexual contact. Worldwide, there are over 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS.
