Harvard Divinity School professor to deliver 16th Coley Lecture at UGA

Athens, Ga. – Amy Hollywood, the Elizabeth H. Monrad Professor of Christian Studies at the Harvard University Divinity School, will deliver the 16th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture at the University of Georgia.

Hollywood’s lecture, “Religiously Queer, Queer Religiously,” will be given on Friday, April 16, at 12:30 p.m. in Ramsey Concert Hall of the UGA Performing Arts Center. A reception honoring the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30 a.m. in Orchestra Room 140 on the lower level of the performing arts center. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Hollywood received her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago.

She is the author of two books, The Soul as Virgin Wife: Mechthild of Magdeburg, Marguerite Porete, and Meister Eckhard; and Sensible Ecstasy: Mysticism, Sexual Difference, and the Demands of History. The Soul as Virgin Wife received the Otto Grundler Prize for the best book in medieval studies from the International Congress of Medieval Studies.

Hollywood’s third book, Acute Melancholia and Other Essays, is forthcoming from Columbia University Press.

After teaching at Rhodes College, Dartmouth College and the University of Chicago, Hollywood joined the Harvard Divinity School faculty in 2005.

She is the co-editor of the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Christian Mysticism, the editor of the “Gender, Theory, and Religions” series for Columbia University Press, and is on the editorial board for the University of Chicago Press’s “Religion and Postmodernity” series.

The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture in Women’s Studies at UGA was endowed through a donation from Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter, Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in women’s studies.

Each spring, the lecture brings scholars conducting cutting-edge research in lesbian and gay studies to campus. This year’s lecture is sponsored by the UGA Institute for Women’s Studies and the LGBT Resource Center.
