The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach will hold its annual luncheon and awards ceremony Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.
Those interested in attending may register by calling the Georgia Center at (706) 542-2134 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Feb. 10. The cost is $35 per person and includes lunch.
This year’s keynote address will be given by Lee Torrence, representing the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta’s Early Education Commission. His address is entitled “Why Early Learning Matters: Improving the Availability and Quality of Early Childhood Education.”
Torrence retired from IBM after 34 years of service and held a variety of positions, including managing director and senior state executive for Georgia. He is the immediate past board chair for the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, former executive board member of the Atlanta Metro Chamber of Commerce, former chair of the Atlanta Chamber Logistics Council and former board member of the Atlanta Ballet.
Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach, will present a “Ten-Year Retrospective: Growth of Outreach,” a review of the accomplishments of his office’s endeavors over his decade of tenure. This will be Dunning’s final annual luncheon and awards ceremony, as he will leave his post on March 31.
The meeting will conclude with presentations of awards to UGA faculty and staff members who best exemplify their commitment to excellence in public service and outreach, the scholarship of engagement and their professions.
