Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will host a lecture by art historian Jas’ Elsner Friday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. in room S151 of the art school. Elsner’s visit to UGA is part of the Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series in the school of art. The lecture is free, and the public is invited to attend.
Elsner is the Humfry Payne Senior Research Fellow in Classical Archaeology at Corpus Christi College Oxford and the Visiting Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago.Previously, he taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and in Cambridge, where he was educated. He is an historian of ancient art, with a particular focus on the Roman and early Christian periods, and especially on the reception of art-both within antiquity, in such areas as viewing, pilgrimage and religion, and in later periods, including the study of the reception of Classical art and the history of collecting.
Since its inception in 1997, the Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series has brought more than 50 distinguished guests to the school of art. Visiting artists and scholars spend three days on campus interacting with students and faculty, the culmination of which is a public lecture on the subject of the artist’s or scholar’s work.
The Lamar Dodd School of Art is located at 270 River Road on the UGA campus; room S151 is located on the first floor of the building. For further information, see http://art.uga.edu.
