The San Francisco Chronicle reported that growing prosperity in China has begotten a boom in cosmetic surgery, and quoted UGA women’s studies professor Allaine Cerwonka about the complex causes. “This is related to the influx of corporations like Avon in Asia and other makeup companies, the same kind of corporations that make a lot of money off women in the United States,” she said. “We have a culture that makes women feel bad about themselves in order to make money. That’s been going on for a long time in a lot of places. Now they have a global market for it.”
