Bram Tucker and Joseph Lanning, National Science Foundation

Bram Tucker, an associate professor of anthropology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and graduate student Joseph Lanning received a $22,597 doctoral dissertation improvement grant from the National Science Foundation to explain how Malawian farmers make agricultural decisions in times of uncertainty. Tucker and Lanning will describe subsistence farming strategies that involve mixed use of resources such as social ties and foraging, and compare their effectiveness in reducing poverty to pro-growth and business models common to international development.
