Cal professor to speak at UGA about new book, gender equity in the workplace

Athens, Ga. – Mary Ann Mason, professor of social welfare at the University of California at Berkeley, will discuss her new book, Mothers on the Fast Track: How the New Generation Can Balance Career and Family (Oxford University Press, 2007), on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. in room 150 of the Student Learning Center. A book sale and signing will immediately follow in the North Tower of the Student Learning Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Mothers on the Fast Track expands on her ground-breaking “Do Babies Matter?” research, which looks at the impact of the family on careers of academic and professional women and men. As dean of the Graduate Division at University of California, Berkeley from 2000 to 2007, Mason has been in a unique position to evaluate the unprecedented admission of women, now nearing equal numbers, into advanced fields over the past thirty years. Her research has fostered family-friendly initiatives for faculty and graduate students in the UC system and was recognized by an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation achievement award in 2006.

Mason is a professor in the Graduate School of Social Welfare at UC Berkeley. She received a doctorate in American History from the University of Rochester and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco. She is considered a national expert on child custody issues and family law and policy, frequently addressing national and international media, conferences and workshops on children and family issues.

This event is sponsored by the Graduate School and the Institute for Women’s Studies. For more information on these units visit www.grad.uga.edu and www.uga.edu/iws.
