UGA veterinary hospital offers clinical trial for cats with chronic musculoskeletal disorder

Athens, Ga. – Researchers at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital are seeking participants for a randomized clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Onsior in cats with chronic musculoskeletal disorder.

CMSD typically affects older cats and includes joint osteoarthritis, spinal disorders and post-traumatic disorders—for example, after a fracture.

To be considered for the trial, cats may be any breed or sex, weigh between 5.5 pounds and 26.4 pounds, and must be able to be kept indoors during the study. Additionally, there must be radiographic evidence of degenerative joint disease in at least two painful joints, and cats must be able to wear a collar or harness.

Cats enrolled in the study will receive a baseline evaluation, including an orthopedic examination by a board-certified veterinary surgeon, radiographs of the affected joint or joints, bloodwork, urinalysis and an activity monitor. During the first 14 days of the trial, the cat will be prescribed a placebo. After that, cats will be randomly assigned to receive two treatments of either a placebo, Onsior or both. Owners will be unaware of the identity of the treatment provided.

Following 21 days of treatment, cats will return to the veterinary teaching hospital for a follow-up visit, which will include a repeat of the bloodwork, urinalysis and physical and orthopedic exams.

Owners will be asked to complete three questionnaires related to the study and to keep a daily diary. All procedures related to the study will be paid for by the study.

Only 20 cats will be enrolled in the study, expected to be completed by July.
