College sports programs gain donations despite weak economy

Donations to sports programs at 54 universities within the six major athletic conferences rose by 24 percent from 2007-2010 in spite of the recession, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The percentage increase reflects the jump to $998 million in 2010 from $805 million in 2007. The increase is due in large part to donations that many colleges require from fans in order to purchase or retain season tickets, the Chronicle reported.
