Current, former student athletes win at swimming, track world championships

Current and former UGA swimmers helped the U.S. earn one silver and six gold medals at the 15th FINA World Championships, which ended Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. And former UGA runner Jarryd Wallace earned two gold medals-and set two world records-in July at the International Paralympic Committee Track and Field World Championships in Lyon, France.

On the final day of the swimming championships, Shannon Vreeland, a senior, and Megan Romano, who completed her UGA eligibility last season, both earned gold medals in the 400-meter medley relay, while Chase Kalisz, a sophomore, won a silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley.

On Aug. 1, Vreeland and junior Jordan Mattern won gold medals as members of the U.S. 4×200-meter freestyle relay team. On July 28, Vreeland and Romano won gold after swimming the second half of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay and helping set the American record with a time of 3:32.31. At the IPC World Championships, Wallace raced a leg of the 4×100-meter relay that set a new world record on July 27. He also finished first in the T44-classification of the 200 meters with a world record mark of 22.08 on July 21.
