Director of Colorado Geological Survey to lecture on UGA campus

Athens, Ga. – Vince Matthews, director of the Colorado Geological Survey and state geologist of Colorado, will present a lecture titled “The Global Scramble for Natural Resources-Its Impact on America” on Sept. 30 at 2:30 p.m. in room 200A of the geology-geography building on the University of Georgia campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Matthews will be in Athens for the unveiling and dedication of the Chappelle Matthews bust at the UGA Treanor House at 10 a.m. that same day. Vince Matthews’ uncle, Chappelle Matthews, was a UGA graduate and a longtime member of the Georgia House of Representatives, where, among his many accomplishments, he instituted a 3 percent sales tax to support public education, earning him the titles of “Mr. University System” and “Mr. Higher Education” among his colleagues.

Vince Matthews became state geologist and director of the Colorado Geological Survey in 2004. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology from UGA and a doctoral degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He also graduated from the Stanford Executive Program. Matthews held tenured positions at two universities and taught geology at the University of California, University of Northern Colorado, Arizona State University, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

After more than two decades in the natural resources industry, he returned to academia in 1997 and joined the Colorado Geological Survey in 2000. He is the author of more than 60 technical articles and abstracts and was senior editor of the award-winning publication Messages in Stone: Colorado’s Colorful Geology, available online at http://geosurveystore.state.co.us/p-939-messages-in-stone-colorados-colorful-geology-2nd-edition.aspx.
