Earth Week celebrations to be held April 22-25

Each spring, UGA hosts Earth Week to celebrate a more sustainable UGA. The weeklong collection of events centers on Earth Day, which is observed nationally on April 22.

From April 22-25, the UGA Office of Sustainability, Students for Environmental Action and other campus and community organizations will host events highlighting opportunities ranging from alternative transportation and local food to water resource preservation and career insights from industry leaders.

Kicking off the UGA Earth Week activities, “Tabling at Tate” will be held from April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tate Student Center Plaza. It will feature information promoting sustainability initiatives from student-focused and community organizations and will include learning activities, volunteer opportunities and a visit from the goats of the Tanyard Creek Chew Crew.

The 2014 Earth Day Lecture will be held April 22 at 7 p.m. in the State Botanical Garden’s Day Chapel. The Environmental Ethics Certificate Program, the Jane and Harry Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and The Georgia Review will host author and environmental activist Ann Pancake and musical group Hawk Proof Rooster.

Other highlights for the weeklong observance will include the South By South Milledge dinner and concert at the UGArden April 22 at 5 p.m., paddling river cleanups April 25 at 3 p.m. and a sustainability-related short film festival at the Tate Theatre April 23 at 7 p.m. A complete list of Earth Week events is at http://sustainability.uga.edu/earthweek.

The first Earth Day celebration in 1970 activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
