Expert in experiential education Karen Warren to give Ramsey Lecture

Athens, Ga. – Karen Warren, an expert in experiential education and outdoor leadership, will deliver the 2009 Ramsey Lecture on Monday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 201 of the Ecology Building.

Warren, an instructor and faculty associate in natural science at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., for more than 25 years, will give a presentation titled, “Opportunities for Social Justice Education in Outdoor Adventure.”

Warren has been an outdoor adventure educator and trip leader since 1974, working in programs for summer adventure camps, adjudicated youth, people with disabilities, environmental education, Outward Bound and alternative education in the public schools. She has led over a thousand outdoor trips such as sea kayaking in Belize, the Bahamas, and New Zealand; paddling the Rio Grande and the Everglades; winter camping in Yellowstone; teaching natural history of the Hawaiian Islands; telemark skiing in Quebec; and canyoneering in Utah.

Warren has been involved for many years in the Association for Experiential Education. She has served on the board of directors, professional group, publications and journal advisory committees. She was instrumental in the formation of the Women’s Professional Group. She is editor of The Theory of Experiential Education and Women’s Voices in Experiential Education.

She received the AEE’s 1998 Michael Stratton Practitioner of the Year Award and the 2006 Experiential Teacher of the Year Award as well as the Blair and Carol Brown Outstanding Staff Member Award at Hampshire College.

Warren earned her Ph.D. in experiential education from the Union Institute, her M.S. in experiential education at Mankato State University and a B.S. in biology from Central Michigan University.

The Ramsey Lecture Series is sponsored by the Recreation & Leisure Studies program in the department of counseling and human development services.
