As UGA observes Energy Conservation Month in October, the Physical Plant Division offers some energy saving tips for campus.
- Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
- Trade incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Whenever possible, use natural light instead of lamps.
- Turn off and unplug all electronics and appliances you are not using. Computers, coffee makers, etc., all use energy even when turned off but left plugged in.
- Activate “sleep mode” on laptops when they are not actively in use.
- Turn off your monitor or enable sleep mode after 15 minutes. Screen savers do not save energy, they use it.
- Unplug chargers, including cell phone chargers, when finished recharging. Chargers use energy as long as they are plugged in.
- Use power strips and turn them off when not in use.
- Minimize, or preferably eliminate, space heaters or electric fans in classrooms or offices.
