Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music, part of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, will present “UGA in the ATL” at the end of March. The two free concerts are for high school students, UGA alumni and music lovers in the Atlanta area.
On March 27, the UGA Symphony Orchestra and the UGA Wind Ensemble will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall. On March 29 at 7:30 p.m., students from the Opera Theatre and the Hodgson Singers, the university’s top choral ensemble, will lift their voices in First Presbyterian Church on Peachtree Street.
For the school of music, the short trip to Atlanta is about renewing old friendships and starting new relationships with potential students.
“Many of Atlanta’s leaders in politics and business studied at UGA, and the same is true of Atlanta’s music community,” said Dale Monson, director of the school of music. “Our graduates can be found on nearly every stage in metro Atlanta, playing everything from Rachmaninoff to rock and roll. ‘UGA in the ATL’ gives us an opportunity to reconnect with UGA alumni in the Atlanta area and introduce ourselves to music students who might be considering the Hugh Hodgson School of Music as a place to study and perform.”
The first of the two concerts features the school’s two top instrumental ensembles. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of John P. Lynch, will perform Jess Turner’s “Through the Looking Glass” and John Corigliano’s “Circus Maximus.” The UGA Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Mark Cedel, will present Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor.
The second concert features the Hodgson Singers performing choral works by Brahms, Vaughn Williams, Britten and others. Conducted by Daniel Bara, the Hodgson Singers recently presented an acclaimed performance at the Georgia Music Educators Association conference in Savannah. Alongside the Hodgson Singers will be members of the UGA Opera Theatre, performing selections from the operas of Verdi, Puccini, Bernstein and others.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. Tickets are required and will be available at the concert locations starting at 6 p.m. on the days of the concerts. For more information, see http://www.music.uga.edu/atl/.
