Athens, Ga. – “There’s No Place Like Homecoming” is the theme of this year’s Homecoming Week festivities, which begin Nov. 3. Activities for students are scheduled throughout the week, and the weekend features events for alumni and the Nov. 9 football game against Appalachian State University, which will feature the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen.

Sponsored by the Homecoming Committee, a part of the University Union Student Programming Board, Homecoming activities begin at midnight Nov. 3 as student organizations compete in a street painting contest on Sanford Drive in front of the Tate Student Center.

Voting for Homecoming king and queen will open on OASIS for students at 8 a.m. on Nov. 4 and end at noon on Nov. 8.

The official Homecoming kickoff will be the Bulldog Bash on Nov. 4 on Tate Plaza from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with games, food and giveaways for students.

Nov. 6 is a Day of Service in which students can participate in volunteer opportunities around the community. Interested students should meet at 3 p.m. in the Reception Hall of the Tate Student Center.

Later that night, a Dawg House Party will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event will feature a “silent disco” in which participants receive a pair of headphones and can choose their own DJ. The event is free and open only to students.

Nov. 7 is Retro Movie Day in the Tate Theatre, with a screening of “The Wizard of Oz.” The 1939 classic was the first movie to be shown in the theatre after the 1983 opening of the student center. Showtimes are 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and admission is $1 for students and $2 for everyone else. At 7 p.m., there will be a lip sync contest for students in the Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center.

On Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. the College of Engineering will host a Homecoming speaker in the Driftmier Auditorium. Russ Fortson, a contract engineer, for the NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas, will speak on “A UGA Engineering Education is Out of this World.”

At 5:30 p.m., alumnus author Carrol Dadisman will discuss his book, “Dear OLD U-G-A: From The Red and Black: Student Life at the University of Georgia,” with fellow alums Tom Johnson and Bill Shipp. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The event will be in Room 412 of the journalism building.

On Nov. 8 beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources will host the Parker Memorial Golf Tournament at the UGA Golf Course. For more information, see http://www.forestry.uga.edu/alumni/homecoming.php.

At 4 p.m., Larry Dendy, retired UGA writer, will discuss his new book, “Through the Arch: An Illustrated Guide to the University of Georgia Campus,” in Room 125 of the College of Environment and Design.

UGA President Jere W. Morehead will be the grand marshal for the Homecoming parade, which will kick off Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. and wind through downtown Athens. Led by the Redcoat Band, the parade will include floats, displays and appearances by the UGA cheerleaders, athletes and university and Athens dignitaries.

Following the parade, the annual Dawgs After Dark Homecoming Carnival will be held on Legion Field from 7-11 p.m. with games, midway rides and free food. Admission is $5 or free for students with valid UGACards.

For the first time, two students will emcee all of the week’s events. The emcees are Raven Gibson, a third-year cognitive science major from Scottsdale, and Rance Nix, a fourth-year advertising major from Atlanta.
