How the death of Osama bin Laden will affect U.S. presidential politics and the economy

A number of faculty experts from the University of Georgia are available to discuss issues related to the death of Osama bin Laden, such as how it will affect the president’s approval rating as the U.S. prepares for the presidential election in 2012, along with how the political unrest in the Middle East will affect economic recovery and rising energy prices. Maltese is an expert in the appointment process for Supreme Court justices. He is author of the book, The Selling of Supreme Court Nominees, Maltese’s current research focuses on the federal judicial appointment process and on the jurisprudence of Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Much of his work has focused on the development of institutional structures and the effect that those structures have had on processes such as presidential-press relations and judicial appointments. He also is co-author of the leading textbook, The Politics of the Presidency, currently in its 6th edition. He also writes extensively about classical music and won a 1996 Grammy Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Haynes is a political scientist and an expert on presidential elections. She is widely published on such topics as the role of media in politics, negative campaign tactics, frontloading, the new media in the 2008 elections, gender and politics, and has done extensive research and writing on the presidential nomination process. Haynes attended the Iowa Caucus in January 2008.

The director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia, Humphreys has published more than 250 applied and academic studies regarding market research, economic forecasting, transportation and economic development.In Georgia, he is well known for his detailed economic forecasts. Nationally, he is best known for The Multicultural Economy reports the Selig Center publishes annually, which include his detailed estimates of the purchasing power of African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans. Humphreys is a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors for the state of Georgia and is a monthly columnist for Georgia Trend magazine.He also served on the 2010 Special Council on Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians created by House Bill 1405. In 2003, the editors of American Demographics selected Humphreys as one of the 25 market researchers who have made the most significant contributions to the understanding of consumer trends for business leaders over the previous 25 years.
