Howard J. Wiarda, the Dean Rusk Professor of International Relations in the School of Public and International Affairs, was honored by the
government of the Dominican Republic in a Feb. 10 ceremony.
President Leonel Fernández presented Wiarda with the country’s “Order de Colon,” the highest honor that the Dominican Republic government can bestow.
Wiarda began his academic career in the Dominican Republic 50 years ago when he wrote his master’s thesis (and first book), The Methods of Control in the Dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. In honoring Wiarda, Fernández spoke of his “inestimable contributions” to Dominican scholarship. Fernández was one of Wiarda’s students 35 years ago.
