A new Illinois law, signed Aug. 1 by Gov. Pat Quinn, makes it easier for immigrants there to attend college, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. Called the Illinois Dream Act, the law creates a nine-member commission to establish scholarships for immigrant children from private donations, not taxpayer funds.
The new law lets anyone with a Social Security or taxpayer identification number enroll in state-run college savings programs. It also requires high school counselors to provide college information to immigrant children.
