Institute for Women’s Studies honors Giles, associate professor emerita

Freda Scott Giles, an associate professor emerita of theatre and film studies and African-American studies, was honored with the Women’s Studies Faculty Award during the 2014 Women Faculty Reception Aug. 22.

Hosted by the Institute for Women’s Studies, the reception was an opportunity for new and returning faculty members to meet and network.

Dawn Bennett-Alexander, an associate professor in the Terry College of Business, who introduced Giles, said she is “somebody who makes significant contributions not only to the Institute for Women’s Studies but also across the university and this community.”

Giles said she was “blessed, humbled and grateful,” for the honor. She said that working with the IWS had provided a great sense of community, one that nurtures and helps develop scholarship.

“This is a time when the missions of the institute are more vital and important than ever,” she said. “What all of you do is more important today and is going to make an even bigger difference.”
