Lamar Dodd School of Art exhibits to feature drawings, installation and photography

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art galleries will exhibit work by several artists including a UGA faculty member in two exhibitions that will open fall semester. Re:mark – 2010 Drawing Invitational, now on view in gallery 307, features mixed-media works by Sara Schneckloth, Barb Bondy, Philip Buntin and Kathleen McShane. The Other Side of the Mask, a site-specific installation by school of art associate professor and interior design chair Thom Houser will go up in gallery 101 on Aug. 24, with a closing reception on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Re:mark – 2010 Drawing Invitational features a range of media, including works on paper, plexiglass and lead sculpture. “Over the past few years, drawing (as a medium) has experienced a sort of rejuvenation, perhaps spurred by a reaction to the hi-fi/hi-def leanings of visual culture,” said Jon Swindler, assistant professor of printmaking and co-curator of the exhibition along with gallery director Jeffrey Whittle. “For these artists, drawing also affords a conceptual foundation and visual clarity unlike any other media.” An opening for the exhibition on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. is free and the public is invited to attend.

Thom Houser’s site-specific installation addresses issues raised in his original poem The Other Side of the Mask. The 1,400-square-foot installation employs still and video images, built environments, performance and sound. “The contradictions, illusions and self-deceptions represented in this work address the world as we attempt to portray it to ourselves and others,” said Houser, an associate director of the art school.

The Lamar Dodd School of Art is located at 270 River Road on the UGA campus; the exhibitions will occupy galleries 101 and 307 on the first and third floors of the facility, and will be on view Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information, see http://art.uga.edu
