Mable Fok, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering, was awarded $174,875 from the National Science Foundation to study new ways to accommodate instantaneous processing of large bandwidth signals that no longer can be supported by modern electronics. The demand for large bandwidth signals is due in no small part to the ever-increasing strain placed on modern communication channels, which are only capable of transferring a limited quantity of information. Fok’s research aims to alleviate this computing bottleneck using cutting-edge neural learning algorithms and lightwave technologies. Her project also promises to encourage high school and undergraduate students to participate in research and foster an interest in neuroscience, photonics and engineering.
