‘Marketplace’ to broadcast from WUGA studios Oct. 24

Athens, Ga. – WUGA radio, operated by the University of Georgia, will host the national broadcast of Marketplace on Oct. 24 from 6:30-7 p.m., EST.

“The selection of Athens, Ga., was to play on the name of the city and use it as a surrogate for every other town in the U.S., allowing us to showcase how the Greek debt crisis, while seemingly distant, will actually have a profound effect on the U.S. economy,” said Ethan Lindsey of American Public Media, the producer of Monday’s show.

“We are planning to work with the Athens Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Greek Orthodox Church and other locations in town to highlight the parallel between the two cities.”

Kai Ryssdal, the host of Marketplace, will broadcast live from the studios in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. His interviews will include a segment with William Lastrapes, a professor in the department of economics in the UGA Terry College of Business, who will offer parallels between Greek literature and the economic situation facing the U.S. economy, along with a perspective of the economy in Greece.

“Obviously, we were thrilled to be approached by the producers of Marketplace to originate Monday’s broadcast,” said WUGA station manager Jimmy Sanders. “They could have traveled to any station in the U.S. to air this show, and they chose WUGA. Marketplace has a true following of listeners concerned about today’s economy, so we are gratified for this national opportunity.”

Marketplace reports on business, the economy and money as they affect people every day. The portfolio reaches 9.3 million listeners each week on more than 500 public radio stations through its award-winning news shows, including Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace, Marketplace Money and Marketplace Tech Report. The program is provided by American Public Media, one of the largest producers of public radio programming in the world, reaching 16 million listeners via almost 800 radio stations nationwide each week. WUGA, along with its sister television station WUGA-TV, is operated by UGA in partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting. Funding is provided in part through sponsorships and underwriting.

“By using the resources of American Public Media, along with local programming focused on life in Northeast Georgia, WUGA-TV and WUGA-FM are growing into a leading, viable communication alternative for our consumers,” said Sanders.
