The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has decided to stop offering its one-year fellowship in humanistic studies, a $5 million program that pays for the first year of study for nearly 80 graduate students each year.
The foundation based its decision to discontinue the 21-year-old program next fall on the declining number of humanities graduate students. The money may be “redeployed” in other areas to support graduate education. Possible ideas being reviewed include supporting graduate dissertation research or summer study.
