A new deal to open an applied research laboratory that will bring in $10 million a year in military-research projects was recently announced by the University of Hawaii and the U.S. Navy, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.
The deal is subject to approval by the institution’s board of regents. It’s been criticized by native Hawaiian groups and a majority of campus faculty members and students, who said the lab would militarize the campus and violate its humanistic mission, according to the Advertiser.
