Wheaton College in Massachusetts was sued by a recent graduate’s father over claims that the college overcharged students who participated in less-expensive independent study-abroad programs, The Chronicle for Higher Education reported. In his lawsuit, James P. Brady asks the state court to find Wheaton’s billing methods illegal. Brady claims the school was “deceptive and unfair” when it charged his daughter an estimated $23,000 for a semester in South Africa, when the actual cost of the program was only about $18,000. If the court rules in favor of Brady, Wheaton could have to reimburse previous students thousands of dollars; other colleges’ study-abroad programs, many of which have similar policies, could be affected as well.
