Performing Arts Center presents Georgia Brass Band Oct. 16

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Performing Arts Center will present the Georgia Brass Band, the state’s premier British style brass band, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. The concert will feature acclaimed British cornet virtuoso Richard Marshall as guest soloist. The concert is free, but tickets are required.

Founded in 1999, the Georgia Brass Band is made up of both professional and amateur musicians from throughout the Atlanta area. The band is patterned after British brass bands that came into prominence in the early 1800s, the result of improved manufacturing techniques developed during the Industrial Revolution.

Founding member Joe Johnson serves as the band’s music director.

The Georgia Brass Band has earned an international reputation for excellence through its successes at the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships. Its performances have earned accolades and rave reviews in both national and international brass publications, including Brass Band Bridge, British Bandsman and 4barsrest.com.

Marshall is currently principal cornet of the world-famous Black Dyke Band. Prior to his appointment, Marshall served for 10 years as principal cornet with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He is a cornet tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He has performed throughout the world at concert venues such as the Sydney Opera House and New York’s Carnegie Hall.
