Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Office of Sustainability and WUGA radio, along with the Athens-Clarke County Recycling Division, will host a Recycling Happy Hour on April 23 from 5-7 p.m. in the UGA intramural field parking lot off of College Station Road.
The drive-through recycling event invites students, faculty, staff and the general public to drop off hard-to-recycle objects including batteries, fluorescent bulbs, cooking grease, TVs, computers, phones and cables.
Those who drop off recyclables will receive a soft drink.
“This event is a great way to get rid of that old TV or computer monitor sitting in your garage,” said Kevin Kirsche, director of UGA’s Office of Sustainability. “And not only are you getting your spring cleaning done, you’re helping to keep hazardous substances like mercury, cadmium, beryllium-often found in electronics-out of the landfills. It’s really a win-win.”
Last year, 1,678 pounds of electronics were recycled and kept out of the landfill. In addition, useful computer-related items were refurbished by FreeIT Athens and donated to members of the Athens community.

The event is also sponsored by UGA Parking Services and Coca-Cola. It is part of UGA’s Earth Week celebration. For more information, see http://sustainability.uga.edu/earthweek/.
