Self-study of UGA athletics available for public review

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia’s review of the UGA Athletic Association is available for public review and comment at http://www.uga.edu/ncaa_compliance/. This self-study is required every 10 years as part of the certification process for membership in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. UGA was certified by the NCAA without conditions in 1996 and 2001.

The self-study process has taken place over the past year under the leadership of Rodney D. Bennett, vice president of student affairs. Bennett chaired a self-study committee consisting of representation from the student body, the faculty, the senior administration, coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and members of the Athens community.

“I am pleased to report to you that our committee found that the Athletic Association is one of the strongest in the nation, and remains committed to principles of ethical governance, dependable rules compliance, equity in terms of diversity and gender, and the highest possible level of student-athlete well-being,” Bennett said in a letter accompanying the release of the report. “I attribute these qualities to an outstanding leadership team and a dedicated group of administrators, coaches, and student-athletes. We now have a strong ethic of making sure student-athletes receive the best possible academic experience and making sure that rules are followed to the hilt.”

Bennett also said he thought that the university had the most diverse athletic leadership in the country, and is one of the few Division I-A programs with more female student-athletes than males.
