Spanish Appalachia

National Geographic.com reported on an archaeological dig in the Appalachian foothills of North Carolina which seems to have confirmed the presence of the mysterious 16th-century Spanish Fort San Juan. The research team includes UGA professor emeritus of anthropology Charles Hudson, who summed up the researchers’ certainty: “Who could have made sense of finding that number of pieces of Spanish material in that location, apart from what we have done?”
