United Arab Emirates University in Abu Dhabi will become the first native Persian Gulf university to confer Ph.D.s, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

Programs for Ph.D. candidates will begin in the fall. Officials expect about 20 students to enroll. The programs will confer degrees in areas the university currently offers to undergraduates, the Chronicle reported.

Begun in 1976, the university is the oldest government-sponsored higher education institution in the country.
