Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Kappa Deuteron Chapter of the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta was recognized with national awards for the 2011-2012 academic year during the fraternity’s 164th biennial convention in New Orleans.

Kappa Deuteron won first place honors fraternity-wide in both the Cheney Cup as Phi Gamma Delta’s most outstanding undergraduate chapter and the Jordan Bowl for the highest academic scholarship among all undergraduate chapters.

The chapter also placed second in the Baker Cup for social service activities and third in the Brightman Trophy for exceptional graduate relations.

An honorable mention was awarded to Kappa Deuteron in the Owen L. Coon Plaque for outstanding chapter publications. Individually, 2011 graduate Robert D. “Trey” Sinyard received an honorable mention in the Wilkinson Award that acknowledges Phi Gamma Delta’s most outstanding senior.

For the 43rd consecutive year, Kappa Deuteron received a Certificate of Superior Academic Achievement for achieving a chapter grade point average of 3.47, which is above the all-men’s average of 3.12, and a John Templeton McCarty Chapter Proficiency Award recognizing excellence in overall chapter operations for the 19th year.

Michael Pisciotta, senior coordinator for UGA’s Greek Life Office and Interfraternity Council adviser, said the chapter has been building momentum during the past year. “While Phi Gamma Delta is consistently one of the top academically performing fraternities at UGA, they have made significant strides in the past year to improve their chapter’s internal operations as well as their outreach to graduate members.”

Founded in 1848 at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pa., the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta is represented on 144 campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada. The fraternity has a total living membership of more than 122,000.
