UGA COE student receives NRPA Future Scholar Award

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia recreation and leisure student Bryan Clift has been selected as one of four 2008 Lucille and Derby Dustin Future Scholars from the Academy of Leisure Sciences and National Recreation and Park Association.

Clift, a second-year and graduating master’s student in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, has developed a number of research questions related to gender, race, power, capitalism and other such social constructions within this context of the sporting experience. He also is considering exploring qualitative research as a part of his doctoral program. His research interests center on the collegiate sporting experience, with a particular focus on women’s sport.

The award is highly competitive for master’s students who show potential to excel in a doctoral program. Award winners are given stipend covering registration and travel stipend to attend the NRPA congress held in Baltimore this fall. They are able to choose a conference mentor to shadow during the Leisure Research Symposium.
