UGA counseling professor Brian Glaser to chair national committee

Athens, Ga. – Brian A. Glaser, a professor of counseling psychology in the University of Georgia College of Education, has been named chair of the Strategic Planning Revision Task Force of the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education, a division of the American Counseling Association.

The task force is charged with creating a strategic plan that guides the energies of its members and leaders and the allocation of AACE’s financial resources during the next decade. Glaser is a past-president of the organization.

Glaser is on the faculties of the counseling psychology doctoral program and the community counseling master’s program in the COE. In addition, he is the director of the UGA marriage and family pre-professional graduate certificate program.

Glaser is best known for his work with COE colleague Georgia Calhoun in an award-winning counselor preparation program that allows UGA students to gain practical experience by working with court-referred local juvenile offenders. The Juvenile Counseling and Assessment Program and Gaining Insight into Relationship for Lifelong Success have partnered UGA students with more than 4,000 court-referred juvenile offenders for almost two decades. The juveniles range in age from nine to 17 and come from varying racial and ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic status. Their offenses range from status crimes, such as truancy, runaway and underage consumption of alcohol, to felonies, such as aggravated child molestation, burglary and aggravated assault.

In 2006, Glaser received the Education Excellence Award from the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counseling, which annually recognizes one educator who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the field of addictions/offender issues through teaching. JCAP and GIRLS received the Outstanding Program Award from the IAAOC in 2005. Glaser, who has been active in national counseling organizations throughout his career, was inducted as a fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychologists of the American Psychological Association in 2006.
Glaser came to UGA 21 years ago from Indiana State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology.
