UGA dance presents Community Dance Day Celebration

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia department of dance will present Community Dance Day Celebration, an afternoon of events designed to share the art of dance with the Athens community, on Sunday, Oct. 9. The event will be held in the Dance Building on the UGA campus, and the public is invited to attend.

Concurrent classes for children and adults will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the dance studios and include beginning ballroom dance (ages 12 – adults), creative movement (ages 4 – 10) and an informal discussion on the technical/production aspects of dance performance. Participants and their families are then invited to an outdoor reception from 2:15 – 3 p.m. An approximate hour-long, family-oriented performance will follow at 3 p.m. and feature the CORE Concert Dance Company, the UGA Ballet Ensemble, the Ballroom Performance Group and community guest performers from the East Athens Dance Center and Classic City Dance.

Parking will be available in the South Parking Deck adjacent to the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. While the event is free, space is limited. It is recommended that tickets for the performance be reserved through the Tate Center box office at 706/542-8579.

“Dance is a most powerful art form in that it allows for expression, emotion or release with the immediacy of our own bodies as the instruments-something each one of us can inherently and, in an instant, engage in,” said Rebecca Gose Enghauser, associate professor in the department of dance. “I hope that this community event will help to rekindle this freedom inside each of us, reminding us that dancing, both in doing and viewing, is taking part in an essential aspect of what it is to be human.”
