UGA District I History Day Competition winners announced

Athens, Ga. – Three students received top honors at the District I History Day Competition held recently at the University of Georgia. Dayton Hare and Will Martin, students at DaVinci Academy, were named Junior Division, District I overall winners and first place winners in the Junior Group Web site category for “Shadow of an Emperor.” Lauren Blessing, a student at Collins Hill High School, was named Senior Division, District I overall winner and first place winner in the Senior Individual Exhibit category for, “Leukemia Treatment: One Step Further.”

Using the theme, Innovation in History, individual and group projects included papers, documentaries, Web sites, exhibits and performances. More than 100 sixth through 12th-grade students and teachers representing 32 counties in Georgia, participated in the annual competition held in February, sponsored by the UGA Office of Academic Special Programs.

Hare, Martin and Blessing, along with participants who placed first, second and third in other categories, will advance to the state contest for National History Day in Georgia on May 1 at Macon State College. At each level of competition, participants are recognized through certificates, medals, trophies or monetary awards.
