UGA GLOBES to host info event March 3

University community members interested in advocating for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender interests are invited to attend “What is GLOBES?” Meet and Greet,” March 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the Globe in downtown Athens.

A campus organization dedicated to voicing concerns of LGBTQ individuals, GLOBES welcomes faculty, staff and graduate students from UGA-whether they identify as LGBTQ or are allies in the struggle for equality.

“We are really interested in making sure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have a voice on our campus. We also think it’s important for other people, especially our students, to see faculty and staff who are living out and proud,” said Corey Johnson, the group’s executive committee chair and associate professor in the department of counseling and human development. “On March 3, people can expect to connect with some people they probably know on campus and some people they probably don’t know. They can expect to learn how to get involved without having to be a part of the leadership team.”

Although GLOBES focuses on education, activism and socializing, Johnson has helped to prioritize the focus since taking the helm three years ago. Its biggest priorities now include: increasing the organization’s visibility on campus, strengthening its relationship with faculty of color and supporting transgender individuals on campus.

GLOBES is co-sponsoring a brown bag lunch on “Supporting Trans People of Color” at noon March 2 in Rooms F-G of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. The free event is co-sponsored by the Black Faculty and Staff Organization. To learn more about GLOBES, visit http://ugaglobes.wordpress.com/.
