Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Institute for Women’s Studies is hosting its third annual Women and Girls in Georgia Conference on Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences.
With a focus on politics, presentation topics include reproductive justice, environmental justice, democratic production of knowledge, gender perceptions and political progress, religious freedom, gendered crime, conservation battles and more.
This year’s conference will include the panel discussion “Speaking from Experience: Women Shaping Georgia Politics.” Moderated by Jane Kidd, chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Georgia, it will feature, among others, Stacey Abrams, state representative of House District 84, and Amy Morton, chairwoman of Georgia’s WIN List, a political action committee dedicated to changing the face of power in Georgia politics by recruiting, training, supporting and electing progressive Democratic women across the state.
The conference is open to academics, advocates, activists, students and community members. The cost is $25 for academics and professionals and $10 for community members and UGA staff; admission is free for UGA students. The Women and Girls in Georgia Conference was established in 2007 to highlight and encourage cutting-edge research by, for and about women and girls in Georgia. The conference brings together leading researchers, teachers, activists and community members to share expertise, strengthen networks and provide strategies for positive social change in Georgia and beyond.
