UGA kinesiology student receives Semester at Sea scholarship

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia education student Stephen Freudenberg has received one of five $2,000 scholarships from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for Semester at Sea participants.

Freudenberg, a junior majoring in health and physical education in the College of Education’s department of kinesiology, and the other recipients are visiting nine countries this summer: Canada, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Morocco, Nova Scotia, Turkey and Egypt.

Freudenberg, of Atlanta, will be studying a variety of subjects, including energy and society, global studies, and introduction to comparative global politics.

“The trip has been incredible so far, and I cannot wait tocome back to the University of Georgia to share my experiences with everyone,” said Freudenberg via email during a recent stop.

NSCS presents five $2,000 scholarships each summer semester and one $7,000 scholarship for the fall and spring semesters to NSCS members participating in the Semester at Sea program. The University of Virginia academically sponsors the Semester at Sea program and grants credit from more than 70 courses.

“Semester at Sea is such a rewarding experience for college students,” said Steve Loflin, executive director and founder of NSCS. “We strive to open doors and create opportunities for our members to become active, engaged citizens of the world. The Scholar at Sea scholarship is one way we encourage our members to grow from studying abroad.”
