UGA math senior Tyler Kelly awarded 2009 NSF Fellowship

Athens, Ga. – Tyler Kelly, a senior in the mathematics department at the University of Georgia, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Doctoral Fellowship. Only 22 applicants in the nation were offered this fellowship in mathematics this year.

Kelly is currently finishing a joint bachelor’s/master’s degree program at UGA. During the summer of 2007, he was invited to attend the 12-week National Security Agency Director’s Summer Program, a program that seeks to reach the nation’s most outstanding undergraduate mathematics majors. Each summer, the program invites students to test their problem-solving skills in mathematics, cryptology and communications technology.

Kelly, a native of Alpharetta, spent the summer of 2008 at the University of Milan, Italy, where he co-wrote a research article with professors Bert van Geemen and Gilberto Bini. Kelly is in the process of choosing where he will attend graduate school in the fall.

The last mathematics major at UGA to be awarded an NSF Fellowship was Yunjiang (John) Jiang in 2007, who is now a doctoral student at Stanford University.

The department of mathematics is part of UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
