UGA observatory hosts two public viewing nights

Athens, Ga. -The UGA Observatory will host public viewing nights on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 9 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m.

“We regret that an equipment failure and budgetary constraints prevent viewing through the university’s 24-inch telescope and have reduced the number of public nights this year,” said Scott Shaw of the department of physics and astronomy.

Instead, 8-inch and 10-inch portable telescopes, used in the past as auxiliaries, will be made available on the roof of the physics building.

If it is cloudy on Sept. 11, there will be a talk on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, Shaw said.
