UGA sponsors Georgia Science and Engineering Fair April 1-3 at the Classic Center

Athens, Ga. – More than 700 students from across the state will compete for more than $48,000 in prizes and awards during the 62nd Georgia Science and Engineering Fair April 1-3 at the Classic Center.

The GSEF is sponsored by the University of Georgia Office of Academic Special Programs. It provides junior high and high school students in grade 6-12 the opportunity to compete in the state fair by winning top honors for best achievement in specific scientific areas in one of 21 affiliated regional fairs. Exhibits will include projects and experiments in 17 distinct categories, including biochemistry, engineering and plant sciences.

The exhibits will be judged on creativity, scientific thought and engineering goals, thoroughness, skill and clarity. Judges are recruited from the University System of Georgia, private institutions, scientific organizations, and members of industry and government laboratories.

Awards are given to middle and high school students by more than 65 award donors from corporations, colleges and universities, government, industry, professional organizations and individual sponsors. The awards include certificates, scholarships and four grand prizes of all-expense paid trips to the 61st International Science and Engineering Fair to be held May 9-14 in San Jose, Calif. Monetary awards are given to selected exhibitors and teachers.

Judging will take place Thursday, April 1. The public is invited to view the projects during the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair open house, Friday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Classic Center.

Science fair research projects provide education and training opportunities to Georgia’s students and prepare them to succeed in college.

The Georgia Science and Engineering Fair is made possible by the support of the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology, Jackson Electric Membership Corporation, Merial Inc. and other local corporations and businesses.
