Athens, Ga. – The second annual University of Georgia Green Cup competition will take place Sept. 13 – Oct. 10. The Green Cup is an energy, water and waste reduction competition between the Hill Community residence halls (Church, Boggs, Hill, Mell, Lipscomb and Oglethorpe).
Last year’s Green Cup winner was Mell Hall, which decreased its energy use 17.76 percent compared with the five-year average use from the same month. The competition saved almost 20,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
This year, the winning residence hall will show the greatest percentage decrease in per capita electricity and water consumption against the hall’s three-year usage baseline. During the competition, meters will be read twice per day and there will be a surprise waste audit of each hall.Results will be posted in the residence halls’ lobbies and on the competition website daily. The Green Cup winner will be announced at the final celebration on Oct.11, 7 – 9 p.m. at Legion Field. Residents of the winning hall will receive Green Cup T-shirts and the Green Cup Trophy will be awarded.
This year’s Green Cup competition will feature a number of events for participants. Bonus points will be awarded for attendance.
The Green Cup kick-off will be on Monday, Sept. 13, 6 – 8 p.m. on the lawn between Boggs, Church, Mell, and Lipscomb. Students can drop by the tables set up between Boggs and Church and Mell and Lipscomb for free pizza, information and a chance to win prizes. Green Cup participants can sign in for bonus points for their hall.
The Green Cup pool party will be on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Oglethorpe pool. Students can get the latest Green Cup information while relaxing poolside and participate in a friendly eco-trivia competition for prizes.Green Cup participants can sign in for bonus points for their hall.
The EcoFocus Film Festival will present a free screening of Houston We Have A Problem and the short film The Hybrid Union on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tate Center Theater. Green Cup participants can sign in for bonus points for their hall.This is a blue card event.

The Green Cup final celebration will be on Monday Oct. 11, 7 – 9 p.m. at Legion Field.Students can listen to the a capella group the Ecotones, watch the UGA improv group, enjoy refreshments and hear the winners announced. Prize t-shirts will be awarded.
The Green Cup is organized and sponsored by the Odum School of Ecology, the UGA Office of Sustainability, University Housing, the EcoFocus Film Festival, and the UGA Parents and Families Foundation.
