UGA’s Poverty and the Economy Grants Program announces dates for pre-application

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia faculty are invited to submit research proposals related to poverty and the economy in Georgia by September 28. A pre-application workshop will take place on September 6, 2 – 4 p.m. in the Training Room of the Fanning Building. Four to six grants ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 will be awarded in 2007.

For the third year, Poverty and the Economy Faculty Research Grants Program will fund applied research and creative scholarship related to poverty and the economy in Georgia. The program is sponsored by the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc., and administered by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.

A 2003 study by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government found that 91 Georgia counties have some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. The grants program aims to further research on persistent poverty and inform public policy that will improve the economy and the lives of Georgia citizens, said Art Dunning, UGA vice president for public service and outreach.

All UGA faculty members interested or engaged in research related to persistent poverty are eligible to apply. Applications that reflect collaboration across academic and service units are highly encouraged. In addition, research that builds on understanding the public policy barriers that inhibit or limit an individual’s ability to participate fully in the economy and build personal wealth are of particular interest.
