University Health center recognizes Sexual Responsibility Week

Athens, Ga. — On Wednesday, Feb. 13, the University Health Center will sponsor activities to support National Condom Day and promote safer sex choices among UGA students. Health Center staff and student volunteers will be on the Tate Center Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. where students will have an opportunity to participate in a number of activities focused on healthy sexuality and safer sex. Information about abstinence, sexual decision making, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and contraception will be provided.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, abstaining from oral, anal, and vaginal sex is the most effective way to prevent STI transmission, but the correct and consistent use of latex condoms can greatly reduce a person’s risk.

The National College Health Assessment sponsored by the American College Health Association shows that only 62.7 percent of UGA students used a condom the last time they engaged in vaginal sex and only 1.3 percent of the students used a condom the last time they engaged in oral sex.
