University of California receives $450,000 fine for anthrax leak

The University of California will have to pay $450,000 in fines after a shipment of anthrax from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory leaked, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The university received the largest of 11 fines that have been issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since 2003. Certain agents, like anthrax, are federally regulated because of their potential to be used as weapons. The university’s fine came just as Congress was holding a hearing about the safety of the country’s biodefense facilities.
