University of California system ranked first in number of patents granted

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently released a list of the top 13 universities and colleges receiving the most patents for 2005. The office traditionally releases the “top 10” institutions, but includes 13 institutions for 2005 because of a tie between Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan with 71 patents, as well as between Georgia Tech and the University of Pennsylvania with 43 patents. The top-ranked institution is the University of California system with 390 patents, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 136 patents. This marks the twelfth consecutive year that the California system has led in patents granted.
